How do I clear blobs on scanned documents?

I scan documents occasionally and often get black blobs where the scan area didn't match exactly the paper being scanned.
I presently use Kodak Imaging for Windows, a program that came out with Windows 95 and 98. I continue to use it because it's a excellent program. The developer has updated it but prices it for the business, not consumer, market.
With Imaging, I can easily erase the blobs. I can select an area around them, right click, and say clear. The delete key also clears the area. The black blob turns into white paper.
However, I can't figure out how to do this with xnview. I can outline an area and key delete, but instead of the black blob turning into white paper, I get a new black blob equal to the entire selection area.
When you delete something from white paper, you should get white paper, not black.
Isn't a way to do this?
