Missing feature?: how to set background colour when editing?

I am trying to use the function "edit -> clear" to erase some part of the picture and set it to a uniform white colour. I draw a rectangular selection area to select the area to be erased. I then did an "edit -> clear".
Result: the selected area is filled with solid black colour.
What I need is the cleared area to become white, not black.
I assume this happens because my XnView is currently set with background colour to be black, rather than white.
I searched everywhere for how to set the background colour, unfortunately without success.
Does somebody know where the settings of the colour for the background of the image is located? (I am not talking about the setting in "Tools -> Options... -> View". The setting labeled "Background colour" in this menu is for the area outside of the picture canevas, while what I need is how to set the background colour for the picture itself (i.e. inside of the canevas)).
Thank you,
