Tree Pane Opens to Folders Even though Favorites Selected

With 1.90.3 under Win 98 SE, I say menu, view, tree pane, and click favorites.
The menus close.
Again, I say menu, view, tree pane. I observe the dot by the fovorities that I just selected.
I then click show in the menu.
The tree pane opens, but to the folders, not the favorites.
I wanted to open favorites there rather than keying ctrl-F1 because in the tree pane you can navigate among favorites with the first character of the name.
I also tried categories but I could never get the categories selection to stick. After clicking it, I would never see a dot by it, like with favorites.
