Discovery--Settings Tags off in Options Not Good Idea

Sometime ago when working with XnView I wanted to get rid of the tag boxes and discovered that I could do so at options, thumbnails, icon info tab, database info.
Later, when trying to see how the tag function worked, I discovered that when I said menu, view, tag, tag current, nothing apparent happened, and the show tag choice on that menu didn't do anything.
After more experiments, I discovered that turning off the tag boxes in options turned off the tag toggle "show tag box" in menu, view, tag.
To do what I wanted to do originally, I should have left tags checked in options and turned the tag boxes off in menu, view, tag.
When I did this, I discovered that the show tag command functioned as a toggle, and, when I did tag an item, the tag boxes all appeared with the current item tagged.
