resize plugin: how to fit largest side?

Hello..
well, new to this forum, not that new to xnview. But there's a thing I haven't managed to do properly:
batch resizing images, fitting the largest size to a specified value.
I am sure that it can be done with the right combination of settings in the plugin, but I haven't managed to find it yet, and I gave up after few experiments. I've searched the forum - but still i couldn't do it properly.
Can anyone help me with a tip on this?
Thank you in advance!

For example, you want to set 320, and if you have pictures like 640x320 and 320x640, the result is 320x160 and 160x320, right?

Yes!! I know about "Follow orientation" but I haven't *really* understood how it works.

That is what I did. Actually, I set width to, let's say 1024, and height I left it blank.
"Keep ratio" is checked, and
"Follow orientation" checked too.
I have a folder with pictures having orientation both landscape and portrait.
By resizing the largest side, I meant (and I was expecting) that for landscape the width would become 1024, and for portraits the height would become 1024.
With the above settings, for landscapes the width is 1024 and the height is of course, smaller, but for the portraits the height (which is the longest side) is not 1024 - it it larger than that - and the width is 1024.

So use W:1024/H:1024

I've been confused about this too... perhaps some modification to the interface would make it clearer. Different wording, or a mouseover with more instructions?

yes, 1024/1024 makes sense, but it's not like it comes into your mind when you want to resize based on just one side
This should be documented, or at least mentioned on the "how to" topic on the forum!
Thanks for the fast responses!

I can now remove some other software, and add another checkpoint to XnView!! Woohoo!
Cheers!
