Screenshot/gif problem

Hi,
when creating a screenshot I realized a problem in Xnview I never had in IrfanView (which I used the last years). To describe the problem there are 2 screenshots which I took from yahoo.com with IrfanView + XnView. The problem should be very clear when comparing both screenshots - it should look like the one taken with IrfanView. The preview after taken the screenshot was ok, though. When I saved the screenshot as a gif, obviously something went wrong.

What went wrong?
Thanks for any support!

It's the 256 colors conversion. And with dithering?
Could you send me the original 24bits picture to test?

With dithering is worse.
The original image? I just took a screenshot with the print key on my keyboard from my browser (yahoo.com, left navigation pane); and saved it with IrfanView + Xnview. You could try the same and see the problem I mentioned immediately.
I tried different thing (reduce colors to 256 first and save afterwards), different gif options when saving. But it seems that is it not possible in Xnview what I am doing with IrfanView for years: to save a screenshot as gif without noticing any disadvantages on the saved image.
Of course, IrfanView does reduce colors to 256, too. But much, much better than Xnview... But Xnview has a much much better thumbnail view than IrfanView...!
So, I see, I will have to deal with two programs...
Best regards,
Thorsten

With 1.91.5 everything is (nearly) fine. Saving a screenshot in gif format works now, thanks!
Just one suggestion: It would be very nice if the "Save as - Color mode ..."-Window would remember the last input value. At the moment, you always have to choose 256 colors when saving as gif.

Hello !

I support that suggestion totally ! Currently, we get always the lowest quality again, it's quite irritating.
- I assume that comes from the antiquated versions (working with Win 3.1) where one saved as the smallest size.
- For instance, my very first HD was 40
Mb (decimal) (!) and the PC ran with 4 MiB RAM !
- It doesn't matter nowadays with the HDs and the amount of memory we have…

The 256 color dither is fixed, but the 16 color dither still has a very powerful pink tint, at least in the export dialog. (Much more noticeable because there's less colors.)
