Background color when resizing canvas

I want to resize the canvas of my images with a white background.

I click (Windows):

1) Convert
2) Advanced operations
3) Resize canvas ---->
4) I insert a % increase
5) Then I change the color to white in the color box

However I still get a black background when I run the convert! I can change the color in step 5 to green, blue, whatever and I still get black!

Please help me. Thank you.

I have just tried and it worked for me with JPG files.

Have you set the brightness of the colour in the colour dialog? If not, the default value for brightness is 0%, so regardless which colour (tone) you choose, it will be black.

Maybe this solves your problem.

The JPG conversion worked.

I was using .EPS and .TIF files. With either of those, the background appeared black when the canvas was resized regardless of the color selected in the color box.

I converted my .EPS to .JPG first, then did the canvas resize and it worked properly.

Maybe this is a bug???

Thanks for the quick response,

Greetings....

Following up on an old subject--there may be more recent info on this topic that I didn't find. But:

This thread suggests that the color of the new canvas, when increasing canvas size, is (a) somewhat based on the type of image, and (b) may not work properly for all image types.

Is that that latest info?

That appears to be the case. I'm using XnView 193.6. The background color for new canvas works as expected with PNG and JPG files, but with TIFF files always gives a black background regardless of canvas color setting. This is not a major problem for me (I can workaround), but I mention it in case it is an unreported bug. If you (Helmut or Pierre) would like me to do more testing, please let me know.

Best regards,

Ty

continued....

It appears that my earlier statement was not correct. Apparently the variable is NOT file type, since I am now getting black-only canvas when working on PNG files as well as TIFs. So it must be something else about the image, not file type, that is confusing XnView or giving it problems with color.

If the image uses a colour palette (colour depths / colour modes = 2, 4, 8, 16, ..., 256), XnView can use only a colour listed in the colour palette as background colour. The colour depth is displayed in the status bar (<Width>x<Height>x<Colour depth> e.g. 1360x1020x24). To change the colour depth, you use "Image > True colours" or "Image > Colour depth..."
