XnView Software

Hi,

I just tried the program tonight and I'm absolutely thrilled with it. We are teaching a digital photography to kids and this is the perfect software. However, when I read the forum, I'm wondering what I've missed. There is mention of colour, layers, etc. that I did not see. Is there another version other than the freeware?

We were hoping that the kids could do a collage with their photos of their pets. Is this possible in XnView?

A couple of other things I noticed that I wanted to confirm. You can only undo the last function. Also, only one effect is accepted at one time. You have to click okay and then go back and do another effect.

Hi Nutty62, im just another user, but I can try to answer some of your questions. To other XnView-users, plz correct me if im wrong.

You can not use layers, but you can scroll through layers in i.e. a Photoshop-file, or scroll between pages in a multipage-PDF. Use the two "page"-buttons in view-mode. They look like arrows (right/left) on a piece of paper.

However there is a feature called "Multi-Page file" (menu "Create"). With this you can create a layered image by selecting images and creating a new file where the selected images become layers. Supported formats are for instance TIF, PDF and PSD.

Not exactly a collage. But you can create a strip of images, horizontal or vertical. Go to the menu, select: "Create" -> "Strip of images...". Play around with the different settings.

Another option might be a contact sheet ("Create" -> "Contact sheet..." but I suspect this is not what you wanted. There are probably plug-ins you can use for creating collages.

Yes, correct. This is standard procedure for most image software: you choose an effect that's affecting the image. Then next effect etc.

I have heard that there are more advanced effects features in new Photoshop CS3, where you can stack effect-layers on top of the image, and change settings without affecting the background image.
