displaying of huge tiffs results in wrong colors / crumpling

hi all,
i discovered some problems viewing large tiff files from photoshop 5 with xnview.
a tiff (plain white background with black text) with dimensions 656x5047x32 (single page) is sometimes shown as a white thumbnail in browser view. sometimes (after rebuilding the thumbnails) grayish.
unfortunately, if viewing the tiff in full screen, it is the background (of the picture) is black and the text are grey. originally, the background is white and the text black. also the display is kinda crumpled.
i scaled down some part of the tiff to two smaller parts (in photoshop 5, with same settings (tiff compression LZW)), but one of the pictures is shown correct, the second not.
i did not found any suitable settings in the configuration to solve the problem.
is there any way to display those files correctly?
if necessary, i can send you the files via mail
cheers, loth
