Compare window non-modal please?

It would be great if I could open multiple non-modal Compare windows from the browser. What a great way to select pairs of images from a big panel of thumbs... (I have just exactly that need for a project of selecting pairs of images for stereo).
Also consider if a user could drag a thumb into a floating Compare window.
Failing that, just making the existing Compare window non-modal would be helpful.
