creating a shadow?

Hi all,
I need some help. Some time ago... (make that a year) I found that I could make from a clear picture a picture that is good for background, that is making it very soft and light or mysty... do I make sense?
I think it was with one click... so now I don't know how to call this situation and I don't remember that function, the button or whatever.
Can somebody please help me.
To make it easier to understand I will post an example:
