APNG read support…

Hi !
• The animated PNGs work fine, TX !
• To test with various machines¦OSs, I made quickly a (funny) sample
AVAILABLE HERE
(needs to like the sauerkraut

).
That format isn't very spread yet, but it's pretty interesting…
- Please, notice that the extension is still PNG only, so there's no means to distinguish it at first glance
if the browser doesn't support this animation (same mess than with GIFs many years ago).

Hi Clo,
Your funny (A)PNG sample works under Windows 98 too (with this first beta version).
Have a nice day,

Hello !
• Testing further with that sample (and also another that Paul-
Ouistiti drew),
I noticed that the
Next¦Previous page buttons are enabled, that is normal with animated GIFs
since one can use them to view each frame.
- But with APNG, one sees only full black rectangles.

- Hence, to simplify I guess that these buttons might be disabled for that format…
- Same result when using “Stop animation” and try to scroll the frames.
- Is it a

?

Hello,
Exact Clo, when I use the Next or Previous page with your (a)png file choucroute.png, the image is terribly dark (almost black).
But with Romani sample (spinfox.png), I have not this behavior.
http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.p ... light=apng
Works fine also with this file : apng-animation.png
http://www.gamani.com/apng.htm
PS:I have not find the (a)png ouistiti sample.
Then I don't know if it's a bug or not !

Hello !
• My sample is only 8-BPP, despite I used 32-BPP PNG images for the frames…
- It's due to the used soft (a trial beta of GifMovieGear) which saved as no more than 256 colours.
- The
Romani's sample is 32 BPP.
- BTW, it should be nice to discover a good freeware able to make such files
(for pity's sake, no Gimp ! I fired it a long while ago, too sloooooooow, too biiiiiiiiiiiig !
And needing a shrimp net to recover the various boxes here and there on the screen :

)
- Note : The Paul's sample is made with the same soft, hence it's 8-BPP too, and shows black frames from the buttons…

OK, thanks for the information Clo and good night.

Unoptimized PNG animations play back nicely, but I can't view samples that were shrunk in size using
“Dirty Rectangle” optimization:
Next file issue

by Clo

Hello All !
• There is an issue with the “Next file” function when one has several animated PNGs in a folder (and nothing else).
• Please, see
THIS VIDEO (RAR-compressed - 232.5 KiB) where the buttons of the tool-bar are used.
- Whether you have configured <SpaceBar> for “Next file”, it's the same mess.
- There are only three APNG in the folder (needed minimum) :
spinfox.png (The
Romani's sample, 32-BPP)
Coco.png (The
Paul's sample, 8-BPP)
choucroute.png (My own sample quoted above, 8-BPP)
• It seems that it's related to the issue above, about the frames (pages).
- XnView opens the APNG alright when it's the first - by any means - but opens any frame when one uses “Next file”…

Hence, the frame is either black (with 8-BPP) or on the chequered pattern (32-BPP),
but fixed, and the animation doesn't start.
- The odd thing is that all is OK using the “Previous file” button…

Confirmed at 100% here with 6 APNG files into one directory
That doesn't occur with animated GIFs

Confirmed here also.
It is a Viewer>Cache>'Read One image ahead' problem.
It occurs when your
example is 2nd image in file listing- which seems to be only APNG needed.

Hello B. !
…It is a Viewer>Cache>'Read One image ahead' problem. …
• Yes, bingo ! You win the jackpot !
- When the option (useful, though) is disabled, that works normally.
- But the issue of black frames remains with the Next > < Previous page commands for our 8-BPP samples.

I wouldn't have noticed it without your movie.

It would! I don't compose my own like you, but I have my eye open for something to convert existing animations. I'll post a topic if I find anything, unless someone else wins the race. At least we have something to view them with (the only program I know about).
Still there

Hello !
• In beta 3, there is still that bug when browsing a folder containing APNG with the
Next¦Previous file buttons.
- Please, notice that now the
two cache options are disabled !
- With
Next, I get an image like below for that file only :
while browsing back with
Previous, the artifact-area is replaced with full black…
- That doesn't occur for an animated GIF (same picture) I added in that folder in order to test…
- Occurs too with 32 BPP screen display, a bit different but not OK…

Hello all,
Both (A)PNG animations (optimised or not) works now for me under 1.92beta3.

Strange, it's work for me now, with my 6 samples (with the Next¦Previous file buttons).
And my two cache options still enabled.
But the APNG frames still black (with 8-BPP).
And OK for APNG (32-BPP) with or without the chequered pattern (32-BPP),

Hello !
• That occurs only for
THIS PAUL'S SAMPLE - also a 8-BPP which worked alright with ß-2-
- Browsing the folder up and down with buttons (or keys) , you get various craps, either like I showed above,
or less artifact-bars, or black, or black
and artifacts, that's random.
- I assume that
Paul built it by converting the frames of an original GIF prior (I've the GIF),
so anyway something goes wrong around this, either the APNG support, or the conversion of GIF-frames to PNG 8-BPP…
Note : all frames are not in the same size, we had issues even with GIF a while ago @ a user's with similar images…
- Here, all frames are displayed as black when I stop the animation and watch them one by one…
