XnView Software

Not sure if this could be called a bug...

When I try to view eps files I hit either enter on the file in TC, or open the context menu (open with...XnView). What happens is that I get an error message saying that I need to install the AFPL-Ghostscript printer driver.

Can you please remove this irritating and blocking message from XnView?

Fact is:

- I do not want to install this software on my system because I absolutely don't need it.

- XnView can show the EPS file - the included preview pic, which is all I need (I checked the PS in Options).

- When I open the file from the browser then I don't get this obsolete error message and the file is shown., exactly like I wish. Please make it work the same way when I use the 'external' way. I work with a file manager all time, not with XnView.

- For these files F11 works in the viewer, but not in the browser?

• I don't get such a message here when opening an *.EPS (or a *.PS) file from TC, via Enter,
double-click or the XnView button in a bar (configured with the %P%N parameters)…

• No message either from "Open with…" of the local menu.
- I assume that the message doesn't come from XnView… ?

Clo,

I bet that you have either this or any other Postscript printer driver on your system. The APFL note is clearly coming from XnView. This program is recommended by XnVew's help to view EPS files.

I can't get that message either from a TC panel… Please, could you show a screen shot of it ?

- It should be useful to have i.e. your Windows in German, and XnView in English (or the opposite)…

I use Ghostscript 8.60

Obviously you will not see this meassage because you have GS installed. Oh well, am I so unclear in my descriptions?

I now changed to english. The message then is: APFL Ghostscript is not found on your system, please download it from http://www.ghostscript.com.

why do you attempt to display *.EPS image-files ? That's illogical…

• GS is needed to open¦display those files, and the message is indeed useful for the users
who don't know that the format is not supported internally… This is documented.
- One can't get the butter and keep the money to buy the butter (and have the daughter of the cheese seller too ! )

- However, consulting the doc, one can notice that the .EPS (and .PS) format¦s has¦have a lot of variants.
So, which variants do you try¦need to display ? Anyway, all request GS…

I really don't know why you try to discuss an inconsistent behaviour of XnView. If you think it is correct to display the message then it should happen all time and not only when opening from an external source.

GS is NOT needed to view those files. Please read my first post again.

• Please, give a glance to THAT LIST, and you'll see that some EPS variants need GS.

• If you use only the extension to recognize the types, all EPS will ask for GS.
- Now, only Pierre is able to say whether the headers are different enough
to distinguish the variants needing GS by parsing them, and those which don't, the problem is there.

If you did have GS on your machine, would you still want to see the embedded bitmap/preview (if any existed)?

I can not see a difference with the files that I view. I have installed APFL (because of the message), and now see that the preview pic is completely sufficient (on a different computer). The drawings that I produce in Corel Draw are exported to EPS for film print out at the printing company. All I do here is to check that the EPS files generated include the correct layers and not any overseen information outside the intended area. I can easily open EPS with Corel (withoput the GS driver...), but that is not a valid crosscheck, obviously.
