Browser - Keyboard Navigating Detail

//Edit: As a result of the discussion, here a better explanation of my request:
When navigating pagewise and reaching the top or the end, it might be helpful if one more hit on PageUp would reach the very first thumbnail. (Or very last thumbnail when pressing PageDown). Currently, you cannot reach the very first / very last thumbnail with PageUp/PageDown.

//End new explanation, start of original Post:

When displaying Parent folder in Browser in Thumbnail mode, I cant reach "Parent" with PageUp Key. Please change the Page Up Key to be able to read "Parent"

I know The Pos1 key does that, but its just one key more to use, wich slows me down because I have to do perform one action more. And, for making selections, I can still use the Arriow keys, so I dont see the use for 2 slightly different performing keys (Page Up and Pos1) where I have to use Pos1 only because Page Up is too strict.

I somehow don't understand what you mean. The Pos1 key seems to do nothing in browser view.

What is your comment to the focus problem mentioned in my first post, in three pane browser mode?

:) Hello !

• The Home key makes that the selection comes back to parent •• in a board of thumb nails, but doesn't open it…

Hi again Clo and pic_viewer,

my bad, explanation was too complicated:

I want the PageUp Key to do the exact same thing like the Home key.

 pic_viewer: I have read your thread but cant add anything useful there, I dont have this problem :) (Ok Im tempted to say that your problem is similar to the raw display bug I reported here: http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?t=14368 and that generally fullscreen should in no way behave defferent from what the normal viewer does. But on the other hand there might be reasons for that I do not understand so I prefer to just watch this a bit.)

I know what you mean now and I like (and support) this request.

The description is still unclear. In browser mode the cursor/focus can be in three different panels.

Just in case you talk about the pic preview area: you can not change that as page up/down are used to jump through all pics page-wise. Maybe you need a folder with more pics inside to see this functionality?

Yes, Pic_Viewer, youre right, I didnt made it exactly clear.

Im talking abou the pic preview area. And you are also right that PageUp has to be used for jumping page-wise. However: Hold down PageUp Key in a big folder. The Cursor will NOT land at parent (where it should land) but at top of the Row. (You will have to press at least one additional key to get to parent.) So if the cursor cant be go higher with PageUp because its at the top, it should jump to Parent.

This would be very convinient, because with the same key you can either Jump Page up or down, and only with holding it a bit longer, it will rush all the waaaay up to parent. Handy :)

Thats what Im talking about. I will write a better short description today but now im tired :)

However, Pg Up is also useful in making selection of large number of images. It would need to be held down some time to choose thousands. And having it accidentally bounce to wrong row (1) might be a problem once it reached the top. It seems awkward to have any multiple function on a single key.

Aside: Currently I accidentally tag images by holding mouse buttons down too long. Perhaps the many mouse/key ideas could accommodate the less nimble-handed though.

Changing "PageUp" to the same behaviour as "Home" does not make sense to me. PageUp/Down is for pagewise navigation.

But:
When navigating pagewise and reaching the top or the end, it might be helpful if one more hit on PageUp would reach the very first thumbnail. (Or very last thumbnail when pressing PageDown). Currently, you cannot reach the very first / very last thumbnail with PageUp/PageDown (I guess this is what plarry means).

Please note that currently XnView works 100% the way MS Explorer does (you can check this by viewing a folder in MS Explorer with View > Thumbnails).

Would this help you plarry? What do other people think about changing PageUp/PageDown behaviour a bit (not completely)?

The problem is as mentioned that you loose the 'row' when reaching the end via Page up. Therefore for me Pos1 (Home) makes more sense.

Whoa, a lot of answer to this tiny issue :) At first, thanks for the remarks and comments, I appreciate that!

Yes, you have understood me, I'll take your text if you dont mind, thats what I want. (I will also edit it into the first post for new readers):
When navigating pagewise and reaching the top or the end, it might be helpful if one more hit on PageUp would reach the very first thumbnail. (Or very last thumbnail when pressing PageDown). Currently, you cannot reach the very first / very last thumbnail with PageUp/PageDown.
Thats really all about it.

 Pic_Viewer, please explain why loosing the row is a problem :) And of course you can still use home, Im not suggesting to remove "home" funtionality :)

 Marsh, Im suggesting solutions for small quirks wich are bugging me in my daily workflow.
However, Pg Up is also useful in making selection of large number of images. It would need to be held down some time to choose thousands. And having it accidentally bounce to wrong row (1) might be a problem once it reached the top. It seems awkward to have any multiple function on a single key.
Right, scrolling with PageUp throgh a big list TAKES time. But thats not the issue. If I have a list too long I will just use HOME key. But, there are many many cases where its just very convienent to hold down that PageUp (or Down) key just a few Milliseconds longer to get to the Start or End of the list.

Row issue: XNView doesnt select by rows when using PageUp/Down. (It keeps cursor in the row and selects all files it scrolls over, also files outside cursor row. Fine job, seen worse.) So my suggestion would not doing harm to selections, as selections are not respecting rows anyway.

Instead I think, my suggestion would also improve selecting. It just would select the first one or two items automatically wich it doesnt grab by now.

More, if you *really* want to select individual files, you dont use PageUp/Down anyway. You have to use Cursor keys at the end if you need to refine.

Phhuuu... This is getting complex! Didnt imagined that! I hope I made myself clear.

PS:
"It seems awkward to have multiple functions on the same key".
I agree in principe. But its not a bad thing by definition, it depends on the case. And we are discussing the case here, so the result should in my eyes be dependent on the outcome of the discussion of the case.
