Reloading Selection Size Precisely

I am doing some CTRL-ALT-PrintScreen screen captures. If I capture a window and then paste the image into XnView, it pastes the image just fine.

Then I make a selection rectangle and adjust the size. Now I want to save the precise size and location of the selection rectangle so I can load it again on the next 27 screen captures I do which will be precisely the same size as the first.

Problem is, I can find no way to get the precise size and location to reload into the same position as before. It is always NOT where I created it originally which ruins my intent.

Is there some way I am missing to get the selection to load precisely (given that the screengrab image size is exactly the same as the first grab)?

Thanks!

You use "Set Selection size/Save selection"?

Pierre,

Yes, I used 'Edit>Set Selection Size>Save Selection As Custom' and then 'Saved Selection' to reload the selection. It does not work. The saved selection moves slightly when re-loaded.

I just tried it again within the same image. The selection moves when reloaded. See the attached images (both are crops from the same image size so the selection should be in the exact same location when re-loaded).

Thanks!

:) Hi Mike !

• I guess there is a misunderstanding there :  In a custom selection, only the size of that selection is saved,
and not its location on the whole image when you made it…
- That should need to attach one selection to one file, that's not impossible IMHO,
i.e. as a kind of small companion text file or so, but that's not supported currently.
With your image, we could have the coordinates saved as :
<save_selection.sel>
Coords=306,312,442,450

The size of selection for this file could be saved too, instead of a common size in the INI.

Claude,

Thanks for the ideas.

Normally for this task (and also for my current project) I use IrfanView for this and it will remember the XY location and the selection size.

If it saves for example, selection location XY as 100,100 (relative to the image origin)... on the next image it will load the selection to this same location relative to the image origin. So since the images are all the same size (just repeating screengrabs of the same window), the selection is loaded in the proper location each time.

But since I prefer to use XnView, I would like to see this capability here too.

Thanks again.

To polish up…

:shock: Something in Irf****** we miss ? Scandalous ! Image

• More seriously, such a feature is desirable - needing to be polished up and even improved, who knows ?
- It's worth a suggestion in the appropriate section, I'ld support it, naturally.
