Single-click renaming works fine when View as is set to Thumbnails.
Trying to hit “the right spot” with the cursor in Thumbnails & Labels mode on the other hand can be a pretty frustrating endeavor at times:

• 
  The green areas are responsive to mouse clicks.

For now I'm using the F2 keyboard shortcut, but I was wondering if there's a configuration that allows me to have the same behavior (single click on filename) in both modes?

My settings:

• Tools » Options... » Browser
  • » Browser
    • [ ] Hide extension to rename
      [ ] Use dialog to rename
    » Folder tree
    • [x] Single click to rename
    » Thumbnails » Appearance
    • [x] Show filename in 'Thumbnail mode'
