re-compression after metadata-changes?

Does XnView actually save/recompress the whole image-file while saving changed meta-data (IPTC/EXIF etc.) ???
Or does it write/edit metadata without opening/resaving the jpg-files?
Thank you for your answer. I could not find this information in any corner of help or by searching this forum.

If you are in browser mode, it's lossless

Une info qu'il faudrait publier partout !- Comme c'est ce que mes collegues-fotographes m'ont demandé en premier, je l'ai ajouté ds les FAQ!
