Preview in browser: OS X dock-like zoom when pointer is near

Sorting/rating/deleting/browsing pictures to me always takes place in fullscreen mode (rating is not yet possible there, is it?) because in browser view I find the preview too small.
I could increase it`s size but then the space for thumbnails would then be too small for my taste.
So this proposal could be very helpfull and allow a closer look on pictures without going fullscreen each time:
When the mouse pointer gets near the preview in browser then the preview picture could be zoomed like in Mac OS X` dock.
The amount and other details (does the pointer have to touch the preview? click required? exact proximity? speed of zoom? seemless blowing up or immediately changing from small to big and back?) would have to be set up in the preferences so no user is annoyed by the feature.
It would also be an option to have some amount of transluscency.
More usefull option:
Dim the rest of the screen (everything but the zoomed preview picture).
Another option would be how to make the zoomed preview small again.
I would propose that a single click on LMB (left mouse button) would make it small again.
Pressing <Space> on the keyboard might be an extra alternative.
The maximum of this feature would be to zoom up to full screen with a single click on LMB to go back to browser view with the preview picture in fixed (unzoomed) size.
