Need for more feedback for long operations

I was pleasantly surprised yesterday when XnView 1.93.6 opened a large (125Mb) jpg for viewing (it usually won't open files that large on my system).

However, it took XnView a minute or so to open that file. During that time there was no indication (except the drive light) that anything was happening.

No hourglass. No progress bar. No "Opening..." alert box. I couldn't identify whether XnView was still working on opening the file, or whether it had given up (as it frequently does) without notification.

Please consider adding some sort of feedback to long operations that currently have no such feedback, esp. opening large files or generating a high quality zoom.

For instance, if XnView examines the file before opening and sees that it is larger than a certain size, then perhaps it should display an alert: "Opening large file..."

Thanks for listening!

I support this. Before getting to know XnView I thought the program crashed when opening large files, and forced it to quit.

100% agreed. See my request: http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?t=15020

Yes, it's the same for me. I don't know if I have a system crash, if I should just shut down the computer or whatever...
A feedback would also be nice when sending a few hundred image files to a PDF printer.

Same for me. there are several places where a progress bar would come in very handy. Then you would know XnView is still working on it.

Hmm... hourglass? I have not seen an hourglass in XnView. The program just seems to freeze. Some operations (thumbnail creation, I think) have a statusbar in the lower right corner though, but it is not very visible.

Exactly. This behavior can be very confusing to users (especially new ones, but including me, too!) and give an entirely wrong impression of XnView.

If XnView had a (customizable) throbber, it could be used as a common “busy” indicator for all kinds of commands.

+1 Very good idea for a first step.
( but in the future, it would be best to have a time scale to get an idea of the remaining time )
