Some icons in preview look strange. Thumbnail is OK.
Edit: it looks the same also in fullscreen and viewer, only thumbnails are OK.
Sample to test:

Hello !
• The icons previews are OK here…

Again…
•Your sample is a multipage icon containing 23 pages (formats), including a 256² one, 4BPP, certainly PNG-compressed.
- The size of that original icon is 315,740 bytes.
- XnView displays only three of the B & W pages in
View, the Preview is wrong, the transparency is not rendered.
- I saved a copy in
GreenFish Icon Editor - without PNG compression for the 256², the file size is 588,486 bytes -
then, XnView displays all pages in View, but the preview is still stuck on the fisrt B & W format in the file…
• I saved another copy in
GreenFish Icon Editor with
its PNG compression, the file is 306,317 bytes.
The XnView behaviour is same than with the original…
•
Pierre has his work cut out…

For thumbnail, xnview try to find the best icons. And yes there is a problem, only 4 icons can be viewed, your .ico is not good
The file is good

Hello !
• This ICO file
is good, but :
1. The
first page is taken for the thumbnail and preview, and it's a B & W one (1 BPP).
- So, the transparency is shown as black.
- XnView does
NOT look for the best icon in the multipage ICO.
- I changed the pages order in GFIE, then the first is taken, still.
2. XnView doesn't support the 256² (Vista) PNG-compressed icon.
¤ Please, read my report above…

Again…
• You can get a sample
HERE
- The same non-compressed works in XnView, the sample is saved as compressed in GFIE which
conforms the norms…
- None standalone such file works here, and puts the mess when embedded in a multipage ICO, like the
Dreamer's one.
- Whether it's the
first page, that doesn't work at all (unknown format message).

Ok, i'll try to find some info about PNG compression for ICO
Almost all fixed---

It's fixed in 1.94 RC! Wha ! Fast , thank you !
• But the Preview shows the first page still…
- Maybe it shoud be desirable to ignore the 1 BPP pages up to the first having let's say,
at least 4 BPP as colour-depth to use in the preview?

You want to view the best icon like thumbnail?
Ignore B&W

Hello !
• Like I said above, the
first page is still used for the thumb nail and the preview…
- In the
Dreamer's icon, it's a B & W one. So, if possible,
it should be nice to ignore the B & W pages up to the first coloured…
---------------
Dreamer

Temporarily, you could change the order of the pages using GFIE or any other good icon editor,
in order to get a coloured icon as the first page.
- In GFIE, that's very easy, just D&D and save…

Yes, if possible, because in some cases the first icon is quite unusable and it's strange that thumbnail looks (much) better than preview/fullscreen view.

In Browser mode it's better, color icon is used, the same as for thumbnail, but not the best (largest) icon. In view/edit mode it's still the same - only small b/w icon.
1.95 beta 1, Win Vista.
