Question for Windows XP

I still have problems to understand all the interactions and the logic behind the connection of

- File types (e.g. "Text Document")
- File extension (e.g. txt, text, scr, log, asc, ...)
- Registry entries (open with; open with other software; non used extensions, ...)

Is there a website or a book which explains it for advanced users (not for server admins ..)

And MSDN Library is the best resource for all windows related technical stuff. Regardless, thousands of documentation errors MSDN has... Not really.
