rename problem (using date then numbers)

ok, so at present to keep my photos organised i use a system where each time i empty the card / camera i create a new folder which i rename to the date i took it off.

so i end up with a folder tree like:
d200
20080905
20080926
20081003

etc

the problem is all the files in these folders are still named DSC_####.JPG

so i thought i would have a play with batch renaming tool using the EXIF Date taken instert, i decided i was happy enough with

<Date>_####

as a template as it gives me almost exactly what i want but not quite, this produces files named like

20081011_0001.JPG
20081011_0002.JPG
which is good, but then i get to the next day of shots on the same card and it starts looking a bit off as the 1st shor of that day is not numbered 0001 :(
20081013_0003.JPG

so at present what i do is batch rename all the files in a folder, then go through them selecting all the shots from each day and running the batch rename again to start each days shots at 0001 instead of whatever number it was.

can anyone think of a better way to do this ? i know its a realy fussy little requirement but i like having them named accurately and avoiding the same filenames reduces chances of accidentaly overwriting photos etc when copying into different projects.

any help greatly appreciated.

You would like that #### keep previous value?

Use your <Date> template alone (ie: without adding "_####"), then click on 'Duplicate', check 'Always' + 'Number' and use "_####" in the suffix field.

Does it help?

(This is actually one of the main reasons for using this 'Duplicate' setting, IMHO... :P )
