Hallo there.....

I use XNVIEW fairly often to handle my photographs. I tried many other programs i.e. IMATCH. And still I beleave that XNVIEW is for me the greatest. Since the newer releases include an excellent option for big picture loads. One can search for duplicates. The algorithym seems ok. It does what I want. But.....

1. I worked on about 42000 pics. It took it's time (1.8 hours on a 1.8GHz dual prozessor (one only working?) with only 1G ram). It stopped somewhere at different periods (16700 pics). I pushed the Enter-Key and it finshed ok.
The confusion is the double-window and the bottom range part. I beleave the idea is that the so called original should open in the left window an the first closest duplicate shall appear in the right window and all other duplicates shall open as thumbs in the bottom range.
Theese pics should then be picked by the left mouse button (just a move accross the thumb to open would be even nicer).
Now I can decide if I want to delete the original or one of the duplicates or some or even all.

Today it looks as if the refreshing routine in the windows is defect.

Having said that, I want to stress out, don't change anything else for the time beeing, so we can test this excellent feature more deeply.

2. Question to the forum. Is anybody else interessted in a proper running
SW?.

Our beloved Pierre got heavy bashing already because he seems to be the only one that finds this feature is both understandable and working. I am not aware that the situation has changed. Do a forum search (also on my name) and you will find several threads about the problems with it.

I now understand how to deal duplicates and ORIGINALS. Pierre was right. It works. I use a 1.86 double Intel prozessor and 1 Gigabyte RAM. Xnview is the newest German version.

To start try this:

Menu > Werkzeuge > Gleiche Dateien suchen. Put them by clicking 'Hinzufügen' into the new window. You may take them from different data pools, even sticks i.e. Tick 'Unterverzeichnisse einbeziehen' if you like. The methode I used was 'Ähnlicher Bildinhalt (langsam)', the 'Übereinstimmung' I used was first 50 (showed many, but not all being duplicates) and is quite quick. After finishing I started a 2nd run, this time with a 'Übereinstimmung' of 70 and finally one with 95. After some seconds (depending on the number of picturers and folders) you will see a progress bar working. Some may now need to go for a coffee break as older machines may take some time.

After the analizing process you can look up the pictures. Do some testing to find your best working methode.

Next you want to delete the duplicates and the nearbys or spoilt ones. We start with deleting the ones which will be for the dustbin. With a right-click on your mouse you point to the 1st picture in the bottom area which is equal (100%) to the one in the large window (right) above. Any picture from the bottom area can be shown in that window for better viewing.

So right-click and choose from the menu > Ausgewählte Dateien löschen > left-or right- click to delete. With the Nächste-button you go for the next 'paires'.

Next we delete an ORIGINAL. This had confused me totally. I had to understand that programmers speak and think in black and white, yes or no, 0 or 1, there is no kind of flexibility and we all shall be thankful, otherwise there will be no computers around giving us fun and work.

So right-click again, but this time in the large left window (not in the bottom area). That is the so called ORIGINAL. Choose from the menu > Original und ausgewählte Datei(en) löschen. This is the sentence confusing me and I beleave many of you. If there are NO tagged pictures, NO choosen ones, then there is an ORIGINAL only. That's it. Your picture has gone. But ..... be careful.....

Pierre has put in a little chicane in his software. If you miss, that there are still marked pictures in the bottom area, thry will be deleted too and you will find them in the dustbin.
Pierre, please change the black frame from tagged pictures to another nice and eye-catching colour. The gridding is for older people not as good.

It should be possible to use this function without the need to read a long explanation text. For an easy to understand operation this function needs the following:

- a title header 'Reference' (or Original) above the left picture

- a context menu entry 'detelete reference' when performing a right click on the pic in the left window

- a directory information that is readable/usable even with longer paths. There are two lines now, but no line wrap and the second line is not used at all. This would solve it easily.

- it should be possible to see the reference and/or duplicate in full screen by a simple double click on the left or right window.

- not a requirement, but the ability to tag the duplicates for more easy selection and a single delete at the end of the process would be quite nice.

I have a blue selection frame (note: not tagged) looking quite nice. IMHO XnView uses the Windows settings, so you might have to change your colour scheme in Windows (Anzeige - Darstellung etc).

1) As you want to do a quick job, use the right-click, because then the menu pops up. With left-click you tag the picture only.

2) What are your settings and which GK are you using?

I (!) do know that, but you wrote an instruction for everyone, so then please do it correctly.

I use 2 XP and one Vista. On all these I have changed the desktop appearance and themes to suit my taste. Selection in Explorer is blue. See which colour you get there.

This has nothing to do with the graphics card (if you meant that by GK).

Ok for left or right-click. No further discussion.

My colour is dark-blue as standard for windows XP. I don't want me being the slave for a any software. The software needs to be flexible. I suggest to change the frame colour for tagged pictures as red, geen, orange or anything which is contrary to dark colours.

Question to Pierre. Are you reading all this. I'm not so experienced in dealing with message boards.

it does a great job on finding duplicates, but how the hell can I delete all duplicates at once instead of deleting each single duplicate manually? I don't want to manually delete each duplicate, that would take hours... thanks for any hint!
