It's a beta, so you must decompress it on another folder!!

Are you really sure? Last time I had this problem it was enough to delete the ini in the XnView dir. The real ini was not affected, so stayed unchanged.

Thanks Pierre, but notice that this problem still remains into the Beta-4:

The only problem I can found for the moment about this is :
The IPTC field (Ctrl+i): "Misc." tab \ "Original transmission reference" is not updated if "Update or Create XMP" is checked.
Thanks for this new beta3 Pierre (especially about the "Quick Slide Show" info text "blinking" problem).

:) Hello !

• Using a decent file manager, you'ld be able to unpack only the wanted files and skip the awful empty INI, that I do…

• Moreover, I keep a copy of my INI in every skin sub-folder I use, this gives two advantages :
1. I've always a valid back-up,
2. I can change my skin and settings as one go from a *.bat file… ;)

:) Hello !

• Thank you for that new beta !

- Please, could you publish at least a short list of the changes per beta ?
- It's really hard to guess that is to test, so the eventual bugs are found by chance, that isn't productive…
- For instance, in Total Commander we have a detailed History file, a short part as an example from a very old version :
…03.11.04 Release Total Commander 6.50 Beta 4
03.11.04 Added: Custom columns: Always show size field (and other fields of type int64) with thousands separators as configured in control panel
03.11.04 Fixed: Plugin detect strings were sometimes truncated in the configuration dialog, now strings up to 2000 characters should work
03.11.04 Added: Limit the number of loaded thumbnail images per side to 500 (Win9x: 200) in very large dirs to keep resource+memory usage low

• TIA to consider this !

Hi Clo, thanks for the response. I unpacked the archive in the XnView folder. And of course it asked me whether to overwrite the files, but that is logical since 99% of the files have the same name as previous versions of XnView.
I always do this, and until today it has never gone wrong. I really don't see the logic behind including an empty ini file, knowing there will be scores of people who will be burned by this. Redoing all the settings is a lot of work! :(

I think any file manager can unpack only selected files, but it's easy to forget to exclude the ini file, especially if it's not always included, in normal version, sometimes also in beta versions.

Thanks for the new beta. I'd like to see a changelog too, if possible.

@iycgtptyarvg:
Installing (unpacking) a beta version over an existing (beta) installation is not recommened. Files might have been removed and you will still have the old files around which might cause problems.

Unmanageable

• Hi !
Installing (unpacking) a beta version over an existing (beta) installation is not recommended. …
• I cant' agree, whether I would have created one folder per version to test, there would be at least
63 XnView directories in my PC for the two last years only !
That's unmanageable…
- And deleting- recrating new folders continually isn't better, the risk of losses is higher,
and it's a pretty time wasting, IMHO…

@Clo:
Deleting 62 folders in two years should be feasible. ;-)

The problem is not what is better, or recommended. Some users will never read these posts and they will lose the settings again and again, they are people and people make mistakes. They will create a backup then, but why should they learn in this way?

BTW When I'm testing the beta versions, I'll create a backup of the old version and copy the beta version over the old version. This way it's better, faster, because I'm using different settings than default, also when I open image, it's opened in the current (beta) version, I couldn't test this the other way.

Another problem is confusion with the "other files", buttons .bar file and other, the paths are different and it's not easy to find and setup the initial paths / settings.

I have requested the options for testing here, with these options testing with default settings, English language, without plugins, without cache, would be much easier. Another ini file would be created and it would be all much clearer IMHO.
