Damaged/corrupt image file handling

Hello gentlemen,
(and also Helmut)
Today I received a picture from a friend, but what I tried to open it I got an error saying "<Big> Warning: Error reading the file <filename>".
This was in a standard Windows error dialog box.
Problem #1:
There should be something on the dialog box error message that says "XnView". I have about ten imaging programs--none as nice as XnView, of course!!--and I needed to know which one of them was sending that message.
Problem #2:
YOU decide if this is a problem; I'll just report it.
--Picasa opened the file without complaint.
--Microsoft Photo Editor 3.xx gave an error but then opened itself with no image
--Opera opened it without complaint.
--Windows Paint 5.1 opened it without complaint.
--Microsoft Office Picture Manager opened it without complaint.
My hope would be that XnView, which is obviously the most powerful and useful and sophisticated imaging program available, would (a) report the error with more detail, and (b) be able to open any file that any other imaging program could open.
Cheers and regards,
Ty
