XnView Software

I just installed XnView 1.96 on a Vista x64 system.

When i try to open .pdf files I get the error 'Format of the file <name> could not be determined'.

Does anyone know what the problem is? Is it the 64 bit operating system?

Any chance of having an option to display the PDF in Adobe's Acrobat Reader control?

Several years ago (about Acrobat 4.0, I think) I built a PDF lister plugin for TC that points toward the Adobe Reader control. It was a one-time thing, too... I've never updated it, but it sees every installed update from Adobe automatically (currently version 9):



Perhaps a good thing would be an xnview.ini setting/option to select which method of PDF display XnView uses. Perhaps XnView could even detect the proper setting by looking for the Acrobat control?

And yes, if the user doesn't have the Acrobat Reader control installed, that means a little unused overhead in the XnView exe (occupied by the dedicated panel with the Acrobat control on it), but it wouldn't be much: just a form with the Acrobat control and some linking code.

Since Acrobat Reader is free, why not? The recent versions are fast (finally!) and very configurable/functional.

Yes, i have made something like that in the past too. But it's not possible to convert it...

I had to update acrobat reader a while ago because v7 couldn't run a certain file properly, and v9 took almost as long to install as windows itself does! Frankly, adobe can bite me.

I installed the ghostscript.... weird program.. didnt seem to do much ( i hope i did it right) but im still getting the same error! It wont recognize.

What am I doing wrong?

Make sure you installed the apl version (there's more than 1 version of ghostscript), also make sure you installed the 32bit version & not the 64bit ones.

To make sure ghostscript itself is installed properly (ie, that the installer didn't error out or something), go to your installation folder (should be something like: C:\Program Files\gs\gs8.62\bin\ ) and run gswin32.exe. If it opens a notepad-like window with some text & doesn't give any errors in the process, then it's working fine.

Thanks for the help. I installed the ghostscript and checked it by running the .exe and it works like you said (with the write 'promp' screen).
I restarted my pc and initially had some problems with XnView crashing when trying to open a PDF ( I dont know why though).

But other PDF's work now the only strange this is that I still get the error that it cannot recognise the extention of the file if I click a pdf right away. I have to wait for the preview to have loaded and then i can open the file.
