I too am having this problem, not sure if it's possibly related to the fact that I just recently installed Adobe Photoshop CS4 or not, or if it started occurring after upgrading to XnView 1.96 (I just upgraded to 1.96.1 in the hopes that it would fix it but no such luck, and I uninstalled the prior version before this last upgrade attempt even). I didn't notice when it actually started, just that this last time I went to use the shell menu I didn't see the preview image (thumbnail) when I right clicked (in windows explorer) on any image files jpg's/bmp's/gif's you name it none of them showed a preview image, however I do still receive the rest of the shell menu options listed in the menu, additionally I tried to click on the 'Options...' menu item in the hopes that it would open somekind of configuration window that would allow me to enable the thumbnail but no options configuration window appeared when I did. I even tried to install Sage Thumbs in the hopes that it would somehow fix whatever file association might have gotten messed up when it installed itself (note that I had the shell menu problems BEFORE I did this) but again no such luck. I even went so far as to try unregistering 'shimgvw.dll', again without any success I'm hoping that someone has encountered this problem before and can help provide me with a solution.
Thanks in advance for any help!
