Where's the crop tool?

Windows Vista x64 SP1
XnView 1.96

There's no crop tool on the Edit menu, like the help file says.
There's no crop tool on the toolbar.
Ctrl + Y doesn't do anything.
I thought it might have to do with the fact that I have the minimal version, but after getting the standard version, there's no difference.
I thought I might need to make a selection first, but whether I drag with the left or right mouse button, I get the 'move' cursor and no selection is made.

Wow. That's so hidden, it's more of an Easter egg than a feature

My settings were already those you described, but I didn't realize you had to press Enter with an image selected before cropping was available.

Thank you :)

 Seriously! With default settings all you need to do is open image in xnview, select area with mouse, and hit crop button in the toolbar. I can't possibly imagine how to make the crop feature more accessible. :D

Well I don't use the default settings. I have images open up in full screen. I can make a selection there, but if I switch to browser mode, then back to full screen, it's impossible to make a selection again. I also use the preview area to view images 95% of the time and it's impossible to make a selection there too. :|
