Changing the intensity of every fifth line (or ones falling on certain number of pixels) would have the appearance of graph-paper. I think this would enhance the sense of scale a grid can provide more than either labels or symbols.

BTW, the MP grid is much improved. It implements several of the more important enhancements I suggested here.
