Trouble Scrolling Through Large Files in Preview

First, I changed the mouse wheel to scroll to the next/previous image when previewing.
When scrolling between images in a directory with large images of varying types, it takes a while to give any feedback what image I'm currently on and so I have to wait for the
image to load to find out.
Question:
Is there a way to speed the previewing of large files up at all?
Suggestion:
What would be nice is if it displayed the thumbnail of the image fullsize in the preview pane as a placeholder while it loads the image. This would give immediate feedback as to which image I'm on and so I can quickly scroll through a directory to preview/find what I'm looking for. For a great working example, take a look at the way ACDSee does it.
