Miniature pictures larger than 192x576 are not displayed, only a big white frame and a small picture. There were no problems with versions before 1.96.1. All small miniature picture - 192x144 and smaller - are displayed correctly.
regards

What are your thumbnail settings? Do images have a small embedded thumbnail?
These settings can be related:
Options>Browser>Thumbnails>Appearance>[x]Use embedded thumbnail
[x]Create thumbnail from original image if embedded is smaller than thumbnail size

To rebuild thumbnail cache (if used):
Browser menu>View>Rebuild thumbnails

Thanks march,
When I installed the new version of XnView I did not check
''(x) Create thumbnail from original image if embedded is smaller than thumbnail size''.
Now it works again.

I am having the same problem - huge white space surrounding tiny thumbnails, despite doing all of the above, and changing (I thought) every setting imaginable. I have redownloaded the latest version 3 times - same results.

Any other ideas?

David, after setting the option mentioned above you have to recreate the thumbnails using "View > Rebuild Thumbnails". The thumbnails of the current folder will be updated.

If you want to rebuild the thumbnails of many or all folders, you can delete parts or all the thumbnail cache in "Tools > Options | Browser > Thumbnails | Cache".

OK, have done ALL of this. Wiped out entire cache, rebuilt thumbnails, and still, regardless of setting of thumbnail size, the images themselves do not change in size. The white space around them increases or decreases, but not the images.

Help?!?

Really strange: Option set and rebuild done and still does not work?! What kind of image files are you browsing (*.jpg, *.png, ...)? Could you please post your xnview.ini file as attachement of a post, here?

This may be an old thread, but still relevant.

For quite a long while now, the new versions of XnView have this problem with huge thumbnails. The thumbnail image doesn't go over 192x144, the only thing that changes is that they get a white space which takes up the size chosen. So a 384x288 thumbnail size will take up the proper space in the interface as if the thumbnail was 384x288, but the thumbnail itself is still 192x144 with the rest being white space.
I currently use 1.97.8 and have this problem, I do remember it from some previous version probably 1.96. At work we have older versions that don't have this problem, I don't remember their versions but I'll check.

I browse jpegs almost exclusively. This is the ini file.

From the posts above I understand as if most people don't have this problem? I find that very strange. I checked this on multiple computers, on multiple Windows versions (2k, xp pro, 7), through at least two years but maybe more. That's actually one of the reasons we stick to a specific older version of XnView at work, which we found to be the best and least buggy. I just never bothered bringing it home, and every time I download XnView when building a new computer I have to face it.

Edit:
Ok sorry guys, apparently I didn't go through all the suggestions listed in the first response. I guess the OP didn't go through all of them either.
Disabling "Use Embedded thumbnail", or checking "Create thumbnail... if original is smaller than thumbnail size" definitely fixes this.
I can't believe I tried everything but this option all this time.
