XnView Software

I use XNView with 'View as Details' 99% of the time. I am an animator so I am always looking at directories full of thousands of frames. I don't want to see thumbnails at all and only see a preview when I click on a file in the list.

If I view the same directory (containing thousands of files) in Windows Explorer... it shows the full list of files in just a second and I can immediately start selecting, deleting, copying, etc. In XNView... it takes about 30 seconds just to show the full list of files before I can start operating on them.

My question is, is there some setting in XNView that will make it STOP caching all the files and just show me the list of files so I can work faster? Only show me the preview when I select a file. I assume it's this caching that is slowing things down.

• Just a thought : Did you try to disable the cache totally as a test in :
Options >> Thumb nail [Cache] (untick the upper box) ?
- Personally, I never manage my files with XnView, but with Total Commander where of course
the files lists are set at the light speed !

By default xnview scans the headers of all image files to fetch some information about the files (dimensions, colour info, file type...). If you have tons of file in one folder, the header scan can take really long time.

You can disable the header scanning from xnview options. To do so, go to Options -> File list -> Misc tab and set the "Scan file headers in folders" option to never. Just note that after disabling the header scan, you will lose some of the details from your details view.
