"Sort by: type" looks for extension

Hello everyone
I have a bunch of pictures I need to check. Problem is, that there are copies of images where the downloader added a .1, .2 etc. to the file name after the extension.

(yes the files are sorted by type in this picture)
When I have a GIF-File with the extension JPG the program sorts it into the right position (with all the other GIFs), but it seems it will ignore this rule, when there is an extension, that isn't one from a picture.
Error by me?
PS: anyone having a crash with this Real Media movie File in thumbnails? And aren't there any labels for movies like for the pics?
