Usage of Keywords in IPTC dialog?

Can someone please help me understand keywords in the IPTC Data window better? I have spent hours trying to figure this out on my own and looking for answers in the forum. I do not understand the defined keywords list, add to list auto., and open text file.
The closest I got to getting some resolution was in a thread where the question was if there was any way to move around key words.
The answer that was given said...
It's stored in iptc.def
The response was....
There is no iptc.def on C:\ or on F:\ (where XnView is installed) or on H:\ (where the pictures are).
Pierre then clarified with....
you should have it if you add keywords in default, the .def is in the user folder
I can not find the user folder and I do not understand what he means by keywords in default. I simply can not locate this file at all. I made a txt file and can load it and indeed get it to pull down from the window, however there seems to be no way to save it from there.
It seems to also not retain all of the keywords when I close and reopen XnView.
When I search help there is nothing even listed under Keywords.
Is there some further help out there on this topic?
I LOVE this program! It is exactly what I was looking and hoping for! I just sure wish PNG would store metadata....but I think I am learning....it just won't.
Thank you in advance.
