Usage of Keywords in IPTC dialog?

Can someone please help me understand keywords in the IPTC Data window better? I have spent hours trying to figure this out on my own and looking for answers in the forum. I do not understand the defined keywords list, add to list auto., and open text file.

The closest I got to getting some resolution was in a thread where the question was if there was any way to move around key words.

The answer that was given said...

It's stored in iptc.def

The response was....

There is no iptc.def on C:\ or on F:\ (where XnView is installed) or on H:\ (where the pictures are).

Pierre then clarified with....

you should have it if you add keywords in default, the .def is in the user folder

I can not find the user folder and I do not understand what he means by keywords in default. I simply can not locate this file at all. I made a txt file and can load it and indeed get it to pull down from the window, however there seems to be no way to save it from there.

It seems to also not retain all of the keywords when I close and reopen XnView.

When I search help there is nothing even listed under Keywords.

Is there some further help out there on this topic?

I LOVE this program! It is exactly what I was looking and hoping for! I just sure wish PNG would store metadata....but I think I am learning....it just won't. :)

Thank you in advance.

If you add some keywords (with down arrow button) in the "defined keywords", xnview will save iptc.def in the user profile (c:\Document settings\...\Application Data\Xnview)

Pierre,

Thank you so much. I found the file.

It will not help me as I thought it would since it can not be edited, but it is really nice to have a printable version of what is in the keywords and categories.

Is there anywhere that I can learn more about add to list auto., and open text file. If I understood this better it may help me achieve what I was hoping for.

I was hoping that I could possibly make multiple keyword lists - or even a tree type structure list.

I am organizing thousands of pieces of clip art and I have so many different keywords that I am using that it is getting almost impossible to locate the keyword I want from the defined keywords list. Is there any way to get them into alphabetical order?

Again - thanks in advance so much for your help.

Hello

In my opinion, the best way for managing your own keywordlists is to use one or several ".txt" files.
So you can organize and modify them as you want at any time (you have just to take care about the keywords themselves). You can use the note pad for that (or an other editor which save in ".txt", but verify the file before use).

After that, choising in the IPTC windows the right ".txt" file and automatic addtion make the operation efficient.

Sorry for my english
