In Options - Fullscreen - "show information" add rating, e.g. "Rated <Rating>". Open a rated 2 image in fullscreen mode. Enable info display by pressing i. Now "Rated Below average (2)" is displayed.
Suggestion: Invert sequence to "Rated 2 (Below average)" as "2" requires no reading but is recognized at one short glance, so much quicker and sufficient clear for most users, other users will learn it thanks to text in brackets.

Support.

I don't use rating yet, I need IPTC or XMP support, not just DB.

Another suggestion - <RatingShort> - to display only the number.

@1: Would be useful. XnView currently only uses the name to preserve the rating. If file is renamed / moved in another application (Exporer or Salamander or the like), rating is lost, and even worse, if another file gets the old name it also gets that old rating...
@2: Sounds nice :)

Note: Using UI-less setting RatingLabel is not offering a full solution, as the number is always appended. But at least you can realize display of "1-bad (1)" with "RatingLabel-0=1-bad" to get the number to the front, and display "1 (1)" with "RatingLabel-0= " (carefully look for the space!) which looks a little odd.
