XnView Projects

I have several ongoing image projects (photo books, etc) which I am unable to complete during a single "operating" session. It would be great to save the array of open tabs and browser configuration/location etc., into a named project file, then restore those settings another time by the simple action of opening the named settings (that is: "project") file.

Additionally:

It would be great to have several projects open at once, in which case the projects would be an additional level of abstraction represented in the GUI as another row of tabs "above" the document tabs. "Tabs within tabs", if you will.

A project tab could have within it a browser tab (or two 8) ), multiple image tabs, compare tabs, etc. Each project would be opened into a project tab and, when opening, all of the project's subordinate tabs would reopen automatically, reloading all settings and options for that project. Consider how much time this would save those of us who work with many images (and for many different purposes) at once.

Such an extra level of organization (which reflects how many of us actually work) is missing from every file manager/image viewer I am aware of.

JohnFredC ,

Superb idea, I support +1 :D btw Notepad++ has this session file feature, but Xnview's can be more powerful.

Hm, I never felt the need for sessions in XnView like in Notepad++ or FireFox. I either let the XnView instances open how they are and "suspend to disk" and continue later or I used 2 directories (todo/done). Maybe I'm just not using XnView intensely enough 8)

How do you do this "suspend to disk"?

Also, how do you switch between projects? I want to select a project and have all images associated with the project re-open into their tabs, automatically.

Have I missed something important about XnView's capabiliites?

I doubt :)

@projects: I usually have multiple instances of XnView open, one for each project, and do not close an instance before the project is done. Hence, the state is preserved. As I said, maybe I do not use XnView intensely enough - I never had the need to write a session to disk and reopen it later.

@"suspend to disk", sometimes called hibernation, is a windows feature. After next reboot my machine is in exactly the same state it was before suspending. Hence, I don't have the need to write an XnView session to disk and reload it even when unplugging and carrying my computer.

Kind regards, georg

Gotcha... thought you were referring to an XnView feature I had missed.
