sorting / filtering - HOWTO?

Hi forum,
I'm new to XnView, so first of all thanks a lot for this beautifull piece of software!
I have version 1.96 installed on Win XP, and have also XnviewMP in a separate directory.
To start I prefer to stick with 1.96, and first learn what I can do here
It seems to me there are a number of 'colums' present in the layout, it also seems apparent that you can add, remove or alter these 'columns'
In the view menu I find a columns item, and a sort of enable / disable way. However to me it seems they don't work, or don't do what I'd expect.
Also, in the leftmost pane I can select either filebrowser, favourites or Tag & Category.
But how can I e.g. filter on a particular category?
I'm also looking for more information on the Tag's. Can I make my own? If yes, how?
Is it possible to post an attachment on the forum?
