xmp metadata not updated by preview pane edits

Just noticed this--maybe it won't quite be considered a bug but it is certainly an opportunity for disaster.
When IPTC metadata is written with the "Edit IPTC data" dialog box, the default is for "Update or create XMP" to be checked and for the XMP based IPTC format to be written. This is as it should be, as this is how modern software (except Picasa) works. However, editing the IPTC metadata through the text fields in the IPTC panel of the preview window silently uses the old system and doesn't write/update XMP data, whether XMP exists or not.
Also, if old-style IPTC keywords exist (w/o XMP entries), and XMP based keywords are written with the "Edit IPTC data" dialog box, the old style keywords will be overwritten.
