Sub-folder problem

I want to edit a bunch of photos in sub-folders. I have the view set to show sub-folders, thumbnails at the top, preview at the bottom. As I'm cycling through the thumbnails I can delete them but as soon as I move one to another folder my view reverts to the top level without showing files in sub-folders. This can't be right.
How do I keep my view as showing files in sub-folders?
Sorry if this is obvious.

OK, I've resorted to clearing the folders one at a time. The folders are in the top pane. I open a folder, move or delete the photos within, go back up a level and open the next folder. What I'm finding now is that the thumbnail decorations on the folders remain even after the folder has been emptied so I can't tell whether a folder is empty without having to open it first. I tried refreshing the view and closing and reopening the program but the decorations are still there.
I'm new to XNView and not up to speed with how it works but so far things aren't happening as I expect them to.
