16 bppc - supported or not ?

____ 1.97.1 Changelog
* NConvert support 16bits per component loading (-org_depth)
I can't find any option to "upgrade" an 8 bppc bitmap to 16 bppc, neither in NCONVERT nor in XNVIEW ...
Can NC/XN perform any operation on both 8 bppc as well as 16 bppc bitmaps (I don't have 16 bppc bitmap files to test) ?
If YES, then the option to "upgrade" is either badly missing or just I can't find it ... please consider adding such (and the opposite 16 -> 8, optional for PNG saving, necessary for BMP JPG GIF(+palletize) ... )

Please do

And compile among others a DOS version of NCONVERT. XN/NC will finally join the family of
professional graphic tools

After some thinking, i don't see the benefit to have 8=>16 bits

What about the GAMMA-BUG ?

Also the PNG specification covers this topic and is worth reading.
And, 16bppc will reduce the image quality degradation by repeated truncations if multiple edits are done
To sum it up, I do see a very big benefit of 8=>16 bppc upgrade
