XnView Software

I moved the contents of XnView-win-small v1.97.6 to C:\xnView and set it up to run in XP SP3 compatibility mode (it didn't seem to want to take my file association setup when I used the normal Program Files (x86)folder?)

I placed the OpenEXR plug-in in the plug-in folder.

I setup xnView to use the default ini in the program's folder to save it's config data.

I set file associations for only Open EXR.

1. There were two identical OpenEXR rows in the file associations area (this seems wrong?) I checked both of them, leaving all others unchecked.

When I went back to check that the file association stayed checked, both OpenEXR's were checked, BUT ... a whole lot of others that I didn't check were checked like Adobe Illustrator ai. This seems like a bug?

2. When I double click on an EXR file, it will open with xnView. However, I get this annoying dialog asking if I want to allow this unknown publisher to make changes. I only want it to display the file, not make any changes

Is there a way to set it up so that I can double click without this issue? If I double click on an ai file, Illustrator doesn't give me that warning msg.

I use Win7 without problem. XnView is in my 'Program Files' folder.
To make change of associations, run XnView as admin

1. That does not explain how all the additional associates got set? As I said, I only set the single OpenEXR association, and many other showed up as being set.

2. What about my issue #2, where I get a warning dialog anytime I double click on an EXR file that I just want to view, not to modify?

Do you have the User Account Control Settings set to 'never notify'?

That would get rid of the warning (double clicking on an exr file to open xnView), but leave you easily vulnerable to other security threats.

I have been unable to get rid of that warning without changing UAC for ALL programs.

My other graphic programs do not cause any warnings.

I've got the OpenEXR plug-in installed, and that is all.

I'm only using it to display exr images, not to change anything.

I've tried changing xnView to use a shared config or the ini inside it's directory, with no change in the warning.

How is your UAC setup? I'd really like to get rid of that warning.

I'd guess it is attempting to change something (no doubt innocent), or there wouldn't be a warning?

I don't made changes for UAC, i use default settings...
Do you have tried to uninstall/install?

Is your UAC set to the top, the highest level?

I used XnView-win-small v1.97.6.zip, and copied the folders by hand.

Is there an un-install for that?

AHHHH! I just tried the minimal install exe (instead of copying from zip by hand), and that worked. Problem solved. Apparently, it installs a manifest or something. Sorry to trouble you!

I had used the zip file to copy the folders by hand.

That didn't work well and caused the UAC popups.

The exe install worked perfectly.

So, I guess the lesson is to always use the install program.
