Howto not to show particular filetypes in View mode?

Hi, guys!

Situation: I shoot with my Canon 30D in 'RAW+JPEG' format, and have on my CF card two versions of each photo - IMG_xxxx.JPG and IMG_xxxx.CR2. When I want to have a quick look through my photos, namely through JPG-versions of files with XnView. But the program loads both versions (XnView is not associated with CR2).

Q: Is there any way to set XnView not to show CR2 files (or any other extension - make it 'invisible' for XnView)?

Welcome to the XnView forum!

Yes, there is: You can use settings in menu "Tools > Options" | category "Browser > File list" for including or excluding a file.

Excluding specific file types is not that obvious, therefore a short description:
In file list options, specify ".cr2" as "Custom file (*)" and uncheck all checkboxes. This way XnView will never show files with extension .cr2. Rather than unchecking all checkboxes, I recommend to uncheck "Thumbnails", only, and keep all other checkboxes checked. This way, XnView browser will not display .cr2 files when view is set to "Thumbnails", but will be shown in all other views.

Size limits
Alternatively you can use the size limits: On the top of the same options page you have a line "Files smaller than". Instead of 99.999.999 you specify a smaller limit which suits your needs. XnView will generate and display thumbnails for files smaller than the specified limit. For files larger than the limit, XnView will show a standard icon. I recommend this way of filtering, because you still can see that the files are there, it's only that you don't see a thumbnail.

From my point of view, size limits are better in your use case, because you still can see that the files are there (not fully excluded).

helmut,
thanks a lot for the quick answer!

The first way works fine, the second isn't suitable for me, because of various size of JPEGs and CR2s (the smallest CR2 can be smaller than the largest JPG).
