Hello. First of all thanks for the fantastic program, that I find superior by far to many other free or commercial alternatives.

Now, here is my idea/request, that I hope is simple. Is it possbile to add an option to have the hidden files masked, but not really hidden? When the option is selected, hidden files should still be listed, but their content shouldn't be visible unless explicitly requested (shortcut?).

Here is the justification for such a request: xnview is my primary tools for both managing and viewing my pictures, that are mainly everyday, touristic picture. They are organized in a very simple way: a folder for each "event", named such to be ordered chronologically. Every now and then I show my pictures to friends without really having the time to prepare a slideshow. Now, I imagine I'm not the only one that happens to take pictures that you may not want to show to everyone, yet you still want to keep them in the original folder with all the other. My idea (but other suggestion are more than welcome) would be that of setting this files as "hidden", and setting XNview not to show hidden files. However, in this way they become completely hidden, and you may easily forget that they are there. It would be nice to have a variation of that options that reads "cover hidden files". They would still be listed in the browser and in the viewer, but with a generic thumbnail hiding the real content of the file. A bonus feature would be that of being able to show the real content of the file on the fly (maybe with a shortcut), without having to go to preferences and change the setting.

not sure, but how about having 2 ini files, 2 startup shortcuts
one can be set to hide hidden files

Or...
Maybe you can also play with the windows hidden attribute and the option:
Setting\File List ... by checking (or not) the box "show hidden files & folders"

... Or better (especially for Linux users, without to have to rename the files), maybe a new special category: "Hidden" or "Private" can be made ( like for the Tag category) with a new option to show or hide this special selection ( by hiding the files, and/or by generating a generic thumbnail hiding the real content of the files)

sorry for letting this thread fall in the backyard of my memory... I forgot to subscribe, so after the first few weeks from the original post, I didn't check it anymore.

First of all, thanks helmut for the suggestion, but as you stated, it's not really a solution to my problem. My "private"pictures are mixed with the others, so setting a startup folder doesn't help.

Obelisk's suggestion about two ini files sounds good to me. It's less convenient and flexible compared to what I was proposing, but it's an easy way to implement what a need without requiring a code change.

As for Oops66 suggestion of special categories, that may work too, but it encounters a big objection that I personally (and I guess I'm not the only one) have against categories: they are stored in a separate, proprietary file, so they are part of the program more than the archive. We all like XnView a lot and hope it will be running on our computers as the best viewer forever, but doing a huge work of sorting and organizing pictures in categories relying on this hope is a little bit to much...

So, at the end, I can adapt Obelisk's suggestion as a temporary solution, but I'm still supporting my original request...
