.xif files are not recognized

I have a bunch of .xif pictures from the 1990's that were scanned in with Xerox Pagis Pro. I was looking for an app to convert them to .jpg and though I found the answer with nconvert. No luck so far.
Here is the error I get:

Version for MacOS X (All rights reserved)

Error: Don't know how to read this picture (picture1.xif)
Any ideas?
