XnView Software

Hi,
I tried XnViewMP 0.32 (Linux - Kubuntu 10.10) for editing metadata with czech characters. I wrote creator and keywords.
I can correctly read it in XnViewMP 0.32 in Windows version.
I can correctly read it in Zoner Photo Studio.
But I have problem in Picasa (last version - 3.. I can see creator, but I cannot see keywords.
In Windows Live Photostudio I cannot see anythink.

In http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picasa is written: "According to Picasa Readme,[8] Picasa can parse XMP data. However, it cannot search local files for existing XMP keywords."
I do not understand this sentence.

You XnViewMP in XMP mode?

I tried "XMP" and "XMP, update or create IPTC".

In version 0.33 it looks that IPTC is written ok, because I see it in Picasa, but XMP is broken completely see: http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=21480

In version 0.34 I cannot see tags (I can see only author "byline") again .

I made some tests.
I found program GeoSetter: http://www.geosetter.de/en and try set metadatas by them.
I tried set IPTC to this coding by this software: ANSI CP-1250 Windows-1250, ISO 8859-2, UTF-8.

Results in Windows XP Proffesional Czech:
Zoner Media Explorer can show every setting metadatas correctly.
ANSI CP-1250 Windows-1250: Windows Live Photogallery (WLP) is ok, XnViewMP is ok (if Tools/Settings/Metadata/IPTC Encoding/Default IPTC encoding is set to Windows-1250), Picasa is not correct.
ISO 8859-2: WLP metadat 2x first is ok, second is not, XnViewMP is ok (if Tools/Settings/Metadata/IPTC Encoding/Default IPTC encoding is set to ISO 8859-2), Picasa keywords are ok, creator is not correctly.
utf-8: WLP metadat 2x first is ok, XnViewMP is not correct, Picasa is ok.

Results in Linux Kubuntu 10.10:
utf-8: Gwenview is ok, XnViewMP is ok if Tools/Settings/Metadata/IPTC Encoding/Default IPTC encoding is set to locale.
ANSI CP-1250 Windows-1250: XnViewMP is ok if Tools/Settings/Metadata/IPTC Encoding/Default IPTC encoding is set to Windows-1250.
ISO 8859-2: XnViewMP is ok if Tools/Settings/Metadata/IPTC Encoding/Default IPTC encoding is set to ISO 8859-2.

I think the best way is to set to utf-8. Why is not option to read utf-8 in XnViewMP Tools/Settings/Metadata/IPTC Encoding/Default IPTC encoding? It is need to Windows.

Yes, the best is to use utf8 to write IPTC. There is no need of a utf8 setting to read IPTC, because we have this information in the IPTC data (local or utf8)

On Windows I cannot in XnView correctly read IPTC encoded to UTF-8 by GeoSetter. Maybe I do not understand.

There is a little problem with IPTC/utf8 in the IPTC info panel. For your example made with GeoSetter, the iptc seems not to be written correctly... Exiftool has the same problem... I'll check...

In my humble opinion the fact is that XnViewMP .035 for ubuntu always writes IPTC keyword in UTF-8 encoding (in spite of any settings).
The best way to visualize that problem is through viewing a tiny jpg picture with test keyword and an hexa editor.
A lot of visualization software can't read UTF-8 keywords
