XnView Software

I have checked Options > Browser > File List -> Use Colour but I don't get to see any colours in the filelist unless I let XnView create thumbails for the pics. Also the properties+type fields of the pics are not updated when I click on a pic (you only see them in the statusbar). I do not want to view the files in thumbnail mode nor do I want XnView to store thumbails in the cache. I merely want the type/details fields cached so I get a coloured filelist after the pics have been previewed at least once (like ACDSee). Is this possible?

Not quite clear what you mean. Once you activate the option "Use colours", XnView will display the filename in colours, depending on the format of the file. Doesn't this work for you?

Colours can only be seen in the file list of XnView browser when you actually open a specific folder and view the files in file list.

If this is still a problem, you have to provide more info. The following questions might help to track your problem:

- On which platform are you?
- Which view do you use (menu View > View As)?

If "use colour" option is enabled, "scan file headers in folders" is set to never and cache is disabled, I have no colours too - a bug?

I have colours only if I enable cache, switch to the thumbnails view and switch back to details view.

I think colours could be taken also from extension - as icons...

Indeed, I have the same problem as Dreamer. It only works when you have Scan Headers enabled or if you switch to thumbnail view with cache enabeled and then switch back to detail view.

In acdsee, a picture gets a colour (and details) as soon as you view it. This also comes in handy to see which files you have already viewed.

What does happen if the extension is false ? The color is false too !! Then, it's fair that it indicates a false extension, because we don't have the "right" color !
{Aside : it should be great to get settings to choose the colours by file-types; or else, use the Total Commander ones… }

- I agree ! I think that the actual behaviour is logical and good.
- Scanning the headers is certainly a bit slower, of course, but better anyway…

Yes, normal because i don't know the type of the file

Any updates on this problem? I'd like to see Xnview fill in the details and colour in the browser when you click on a file. At this point the file is read completely anyway (hence the required info is available) because a preview is shown. This way you can keep track of which files in a dir you have seen (the coloured ones) and which ones you haven't.
