hello,
(sorry for my bad english, i am french).
My OS is ubuntu 10.04 with wine.
i have installed XnViewMP 0.35 for windows under wine. I have no problem at all with it.
i choose tools>settings>metadata>IPTC encoding default: iso8859-1
UTF-8 is no ticked
I can write and read back a keyword such as "éééé" in my jpg test file.

If I open the same jpg test file with XnView unix i see the right keyword "éééé".
If i add a new keyword as "john doe" that new keyword is correctly recorded BUT
the preceding keyword is transformed in in "éééé" whose hexa value is x"c3a9c3a9c3a9c3a9".
The keywords are written back with UTF-8 encoding both in the IPTC and XMP area. I verified it with an hexa editor.

So i have to keep the windows version!
Do i miss something ?
Thanks for your help. XnView is great!

hello Roumano,
In fact I tried with iso8859-15, as i said in the title(I want the "€" character).
I made a mistake when i wrote iso-8859-1 in the text.
i don't want encode my keyword with utf-8 because I give my photos to friends whose graphic software can't manage utf-8.

hello Pierre,
I am migrating from XP to ubuntu.
So i installed wine in my ubuntu and i was very pleased to see that XnViewMP 0.35 for windows works fine with wine.
BUT I would prefer of course XnViewMP 0.35 for unix.
And it is with XnViewMP 0.35 for Unix that i meet the problem of wrong keyword encoding character.
By the way my first attemp was with XnViewMP 0.34. I met the same problem.
To reproduce the problem i think that you have only to install XnViewMP .035 for Unix and to observe that you can't write IPTC keyword
with ISO8859-15 encoding (using of course accented letters).
Thanks
