[DOS] opening too many images with external program

I was viewing the images in a folder and had them all selected (426 images) in order to perform a batch operation. Before performing the batch operation, I wanted to open one of the images in an external viewer, to double-check some EXIF value. So I right click that image, and clicked Open With -> Associated Program (which on my Windows 7, is Irfan View).
What happened next was the equivalent of hell on earth for a computer: XnView launched 426 instances of Irfan! This brought my system to a halt, Windows 7 ran out of memory and switched from the Aero theme to the plain one, Firefox crashed etc.
Please implement a simple check to warn the user if they really want to open more than, say, 10 files at once. See also this feature request.
