RC4: English translation

Some suggestions for the English translation:
1. Menu: "Tools > Create Contact Sheet..." -> "Contact Sheet..."
(Like "Webpage...",)
2. Menu: "Tools > Generate Files listing" -> "Generate File Listing..." or "File Listing..."
3. Menu "Tools > View in Fullscreen" > "Open in Fullscreen".
4a. Context menu: "Open with... > Associated Program" > "Open - System"
4b. Context menu: "Open with... > Associated Editor" > "Edit - System"
5a. Menu (View mode): Edit > Set Selection ratio > "Selection ratio"
5b. Menu (View mode): Edit > Set Selection size > "Selection size"
These are minor change, mainly shorter labels which should make things clearer. (Shorter labels and clearer meaning sounds like a contradiction, but compressing things to the important part makes things clearer and easier to recognize.)
Feedback and comments welcome (like always).

1 & 2: I'd rather have "Webpage..." replaced with "Create Webpage...".
Or even better: create another cascaded menu called "Generate ->" with sub-items called "Webpage", "Contact sheet", "File listing", "Multi-Page Image", "CD (with Nero Burning ROM)" and maybe even "Slideshow" (similar to ACDSee btw). Those things don't get used that often anyway. Like this:
3: I think it makes sense the way it is but i don't really care.
4: No, we already had this discussion and this was what we had decided on. Except maybe "Default program" and "Default editor".
5: This one i wouldn't mind. But then again, i'm surprised you didn't ask to change "Selection - swap width & height" since it's far longer and thus your requested change wouldn't make any difference for the menu's size.

3.
"Open in Fullscreen" - maybe...
But I suggest to rename - "Open ... Enter" to "Open in View mode ... Enter" or "Open in Viewer ... Enter" since it is always opened in Viewer.
4.
I don't like term "System" - it's strange and confusing (also for me)...
Term "Associated" is clear for all users and it's not too long (also it's only a sub-menu).

"View" would actually be a nice word (View, View in Fullscreen, View with") The point is that you cannot apply "view" to Audio files. So "View" cannot be used.

"System" is not so nice, but much better than "Shell". "Open" and "Edit" are known from the MS Explorer menus, if possible these terms should also be used in the XnView menu.
"Open (Associated)" and "Edit (Associated)" would be short, but not so sure whether it's clear and good English. Let's continue the discussion in the original thread. I'll post there.

O.k. At least it should be consistent.

I don't like cascaded menus very much. Let's postpone this discussion...

I have seen that thread
RC1: Open - System / Edit - System - very useful but. But from my point of view in that discussion there was no real agreement. Think the way it is now is not clear. I'll reopen that topic and post there.

Right. But it's hard to find a short version of "Selection - swap width & height".

Yes, perhaps open is better. But i have view in many others menu items...

And i don't like overloaded menus. Matter of taste as it seems. I have my WinXP tweaked to have very short delay in unfolding sub-menus. So i don't mind them.

True. "Swap selection width & height" would get rid of the " - " for a start.

Just "Webpage..." looks kinda weird to me. An additional "Create" doesn't hurt IMHO.

I
strongly agree with Danny - context menu is really
overloaded.
I
highly support his idea - see Danny's image above.
I could suggest many other items, you can't add all to the context menu.
If user use some option too often, he can use keyboard shortcut.
Now, if I want to find e.g. "copy" is not very easy, so I rather use just Ctrl+C, but in other programs I use context menu often.
And what about this?
3. ... But I suggest to rename - "Open ... Enter" to "Open in View mode ... Enter" or "Open in Viewer ... Enter" since it is always opened in Viewer.

We should post changes in the wording more often, the result is an interesting discussion
- Restructure "Tools" menu
The "Tools" menu has many entries that's true. Most people use the menu items "Webpage", "Contact sheet", "File listing" not so often. Grouping these menu items in a cascaded menu could make things clearer.
Another solution might be introducing a new main menu item "Create" on the sam level as "Tools". The advantage is that you would have the "Tools" menu cleaned up and still can access the menu items quickly. The disadvantage might be that people might open "Tools" menu and search the functionality, there. Also the "Create" functionality are not important enough to have an own main menu item.
A third option is to change the structure of the context menu and use cascaded menus, there, only.
Hard to decide what is best...

That's better. I think we should change that. So we'll have:
Code: Select all
Selection ratio >
Selection size >
Swap selection width & height
Danny wrote:1 & 2: I'd rather have "Webpage..." replaced with "Create Webpage...".
O.k. Let's use "Create Webpage...", "Create Contact Sheet..." until we have made a decision on restructuring the "Tools" menu.
Dreamer wrote:3. ... But I suggest to rename - "Open ... Enter" to "Open in View mode ... Enter" or "Open in Viewer ... Enter" since it is always opened in Viewer.
This is discussed in a separate topic.
