1.98 - multipage tiff and alpha channel

When I create a multipage tiff (from browser) and include a png with alpha channel as a source, the transparency is lost for that page in result. However, converting same png to a single page tiff results in a transparent tiff.
Are multipage tiff's capable of supporting transparency?
Settings: color compression none.
